Educational Toy Companies

To help the parents in supporting their kids to learn while growing up, innumerable toy companies have come up with various educational toys. These companies manufacture toys and supply them to the various toy stores spread all over the country. Some may even have their own retail stores. They provide their customers with a wide range of collections to choose from.

These companies conduct a close study of the needs and necessities of a toddler and design the toys accordingly. Different companies manufacture different kinds of toys and often become popular for a particular toy, which has been largely accepted and used by parents to educate their children.

The toy manufacturers help to form the backbone of the toy industry and thus they have to be very careful about designing and producing the toys they do. The researchers and the engineers of these companies also keep in mind the safety aspect of each toy. It is necessary for these companies to ensure that their toys are not capable of harming the child in any way. If there are any potential dangers associated with the toy, clear and precise information about the possibilities of dangers associated must be provided by the company to accompany the toy explaining how to play with or use the specific toy. Any unwanted incident caused due to their carelessness may result in ruining their reputation and business position in the market. Thus, toy companies are very particular about the quality of all manufactured toys.

These companies employ specialists for every department, from research to the final production of the toys. All these toys are tested before reaching the shop floor, and eventually to the kid's room. These toys may vary from simple puzzle solving games, to building blocks, toy guns, stuffed toys, and theme toys, consisting of stories and incidents to play with. Educational toy companies also keep in mind how educational a toy can be in keeping with the age, and gender of the child, including the fun part associated with the toy.

How to Find Valuable Educational Toys with the Best Price

Have you ever found difficulties in finding toys for your children? Do you know the important aspects of appropriate toys for them? What you will see below are some helpful advice to help you find the best for your little ones.

Children learn through toys and play about colors, shapes, sounds, and numbers. It helps them develop their eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity, helping them later on to compare their experience and use their imagination to talk.

It is difficult to judge a toy for its effectiveness in teaching children and some toys that look helpful in their boxes lose their potential when they are taken out.

Nevertheless, learning how to recognize the play value of a toy is a skill that can be acquired over time. One thing to understand is that the child should be given a toy geared towards his or her age group, as it is not sensible to think that advanced toys would help the child's learning to grow faster.

- Toys should not promote a single thought or concept; instead, they should promote creativity and thinking skills. Toys based on a single concept, such as a math toy normally is not played with and it is better to roll the dice and let the child add the numbers towards a certain goal as it is fun as well as educational.

- Toys should cater to individual developmental skills such as miniature replicas of household products for toddlers to gain an understanding of how things function.

- Toys that can be played in a number of ways serve as great educational tools. For example, blocks will never disappear simply because they provide the toddler understandings of gravity by helping them build and knock down towers, while enhancing creativity in older children who build castles out of them to create their own worlds.

- Toys should be checked for durability and safety before being bought. Durability is extremely important so that the toy is played with and remains helpful in developmental skills.

- Children tend to clamor for the latest toys that might not serve any educational purpose, like trend figures that can be played only in their specific roles and cannot be expanded towards thinking that is more creative. Instead of breaking your child's heart by not buying them their favorite action figure, it is better to buy them a jigsaw of the figure or playing cards, games, and books too.

- A toy is good if it is fun for the child to play with. Buying toys that can be played in a number of ways would be a wise decision to invest in as they would be played with for a long period of time and would give the maximum learning experience to the child.

The basic principles of toy selection include the following:

- Suitable Design: For the correct age group with the best concept, colors, and materials, with concise and crystal clear instructions.

- Quality: The quality of workmanship and relation of materials used with colors and shapes define it.

- Durability: It is of the utmost importance as children can break even the best of the toys.

- Safety: Protection is vital for the children from toys with splintered edges, flammability, and the use of toxic materials.

- Educational: By providing instructions so that the parents can explain the use of the toy to the child in simple terms.

- Creative: To help the child develop their imagination, you must be able to use the toy in alternate ways by creating new games, and play with it.

- Cost: It should be another factor that should be considered since similar toys may have a major cost difference.

- Play Value: So that the toys are long lasting and the child enjoys playing with it for as long as possible, each time giving the child newer developmental skills and encouraging the child to play again and again with newer insights into the way things work.

- Quality vs. Quantity: Too many toys could overwhelm the child and hamper the child's creative development, as the child may not be able to concentrate on a single toy for long enough, hence rendering the toys useless. The whole purpose of giving the child a toy is to develop the creative thinking and skills and not give the idea that more toys mean more happiness.

Following the above guidelines would ensure the promotion of the purpose of learning through play by helping your child's developmental skills to improve with time no matter what age your child is.

Where to Buy Toys Made in the U.S., Canada and Europe

Have you been thinking about your kids' toys lately? Chances are, if you are a parent, you have been. The many recalls of products made in China have dominated the news recently. We have had problems with tires, toothpaste, pet food, and the latest: toys. (Correction: While researching this article, I stumbled across a recall on children's pajamas.) There is considerable speculation as to why and how this could have happened, and plenty of blame going around. However, that is not the major concern of most parents. Most of us just want to keep our children safe. For now, steering clear of purchasing products made in China, and the entire developing Pacific Rim is probably the safest route for the present time.

If you have been shopping recently, and looking at labels, you have probably come to the realization that buying items made in the U.S., toys in particular, is no easy task. I have just returned from one such trip to a toy store where I found some toys that are manufactured in the U.S., Canada, and Europe. I also learned that you cannot rely on a brand name to make your selections. For example, good old-fashioned Crayola crayons are made in the U.S.A. However, some other products distributed by the company are made in China. Another example is LEGO. Legos are made in Denmark and a few other European countries. But when I checked the Duplo Blocks, which are the larger blocks made for younger children, the packages indicated that some of them were made in China.

Reading labels can be confusing too. While looking for the words "made in" do not be distracted by the words "distributed by". These are two completely different things. The words "made in" are the words you are looking for. Another potentially confusing issue is packaging. A set of blocks called Mega Bloks are made in Canada. The bag they come in is made in China.

What can we do?

First, think about the obvious fact that most of the problems have been caused by children putting toys, or parts of toys, in their mouths. Keep in mind that any toy that poses a choking hazard is more lethal than anything. This remains the primary reason for toy recalls regardless where they are made. Be sure to follow the age guidelines printed on the package when choosing toys. I have had parents say to me that they don't pay much attention to the guidelines because their child is more advanced. That may be true intellectually, but the guidelines take physical development into consideration as well.

A simple way to test whether or not a toy and the parts of the toy can pose a choking hazard is to use an empty tube from a roll of toilet paper. If you can drop the piece into the tube, it is considered too small for children 3 years of age or younger. Inspect your child's toys frequently. Look for loose parts, sharp edges, and broken parts. Do not buy any toy that features magnetic parts. Swallowing magnets can result in serious injury. Also, look for labels that say PVC Free. This applies to baby toys, teething rings, and other things that may end up in baby's mouth.

Share your knowledge.

I have started a page on our website of featuring toys made in the U.S./Canada/Europe. And in the forum there is a special section for toys our readers recommend and those to avoid. Please add your knowledge by making a post. If you have made any toys of your own, please share here.

Start shopping now.

If you are concerned about these issues, the best recommendation I can make is to start shopping now. Even if you intend to order products on the internet, I have a feeling that supplies will run short very soon. Here are some names of some sites that sell American made toys, dolls and puzzles:

Vermont Teddy Bear

Whittle Short Line

Shop for America

Commissary Toys

Turner Toys

Consider toy alternatives.

Making your own toys is an avenue that some people are considering. A few books on the subject are on the website. Or, maybe something altogether different: a family vacation for example, or a party. The most important thing is that you think about it now so that you have time to prepare.

Consider a modified approach.

Some people would like to purchase certain toys because they are favorites and do not consider the problem to be that bad. My recommendation is that if you do decide to buy the toy(s), please do not buy anything that your child may put in their mouth. And, second, keep yourself informed. Pay attention to the latest news bulletins regarding recalls.

Ali's 2 sense... I know that some of you have been reading that if corporations try to pull out of China, or impose stricter regulations on the manufacturers, the Chinese have threatened to "dump" U.S. bonds and cause some sort of financial havoc here in the U.S. This response shows a blatant disregard for the safety and welfare of our children. That is completely unacceptable. They may as well be saying, "if you don't buy our poisoned toys, you will be sorry" -- What? I don't think so. Just remember -- you, the consumer, have the final say. Vote with your wallet.

Prehistoric To Playstation - A History Of Children's Toys

Traditional toys and games have been a part of society and culture all over the world for thousands of centuries, possibly since the beginning of time. As long ago as 6000 B.C., we know of the existence of games similar to modern day chess. Babylonians in 4000 B.C. also played a board game similar to traditional games of checkers and chess.

The first games of backgammon have been dated back to ancient Samaria in 3000 B.C. In Egypt, toy marbles were first fashioned out of stone. By 2000 B.C., Egyptians were making and playing with a number of children's toys and games. Dolls were made from string, paper, and other easy to find materials and board games much like our traditional game of checkers were played. At the same time, the first skates, constructed of iron, were in use in Scandinavia.

Traditional toys like kites and yo-yos were first introduced in 1000 B.C. Though kites were probably in existence long before, their first recorded appearance was in China during this time period. Greek children begin to play with yo-yos made of stone. Soon after, the first playing cards were dealt in Asia.

Over the next thousand years, many of the kids toys we know of today were designed in their earliest forms from crude materials. Most traditional toy inventions were not a recorded part of history until the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The first roller skates were invented in 1759 by a man named Joseph Merlin, and, like many traditional toys, they are still being refined and altered today to fit modern society.

The 19th century saw the introduction of many traditional toys in America and throughout Europe. Dolls were already being made in several European countries, but in 1840 an American doll maker began the first mass production of this still popular traditional toy. Only three years later, the first American board game was produced, called 'The Mansion of Happiness.'

Board games continued to be popular children's toys throughout the years. The Indian game, Parcheesi, is tone of he oldest toys to still be produced today and was introduced to England in 1867 as Ludo. As the 19th century drew to a close, more and more innovative traditional toys came into production. Traditional toys, like alphabet blocks, stuffed animals, and wagons and sleds, were all being commercially manufactured.

The late 1800's saw the introduction of toy guns and pistols, as well as the BB gun. The concept of talking toy dolls was perfected and high quality wooden toys [http://www.monkeyshine.co.uk/traditional-toys-21/wooden-toys-22] were produced in a number of traditional toy styles, including train sets. Radio Flyer developed the traditional toy sled for outdoor winter fun and musical toys and soft toys were in mass production.

The early 20th century marked the invention of lots of traditional toys children still adore during playtime today. Battery powered train sets and the famous Lionel trains were invented in the early 1900's and the cherished teddy bear became more and more popular in the United States. Other traditional toys, like rag dolls, stacking rings, and all sorts of block varieties were also introduced during the first part of the 20th century.

Today, video games and electronic toys have gained a fair share of the toy market, but classic, traditional toys still continue to warm the hearts of children around the world. Traditional toys, like dolls, blocks, and board games, have been around for thousands of years and will most likely continue to be an important part of childhoods for thousands more.

The Toy Room: A Great Room for Children And Parents

Every child needs a special, magical place: a corner of the world (or at least the house) where he can escape, have fun, and rule his tiny kingdom. And this place is the toy room.

Why You Need a Toy Room

There are many benefits to having a designated Toy Room in the house. The first, and perhaps the most convincing argument, is that the sense of ownership--"this is my space, with my things"--helps develop a child's security and self esteem. Just put yourself in your child's shoes. He's smaller than everyone else, the grown ups set the rules, and the world seems like such a big place with scary and unfamiliar things and experiences. But the toy room becomes his sanctuary. He is surrounded by everything he loves, and has complete control over what happens within the walls of the toy room. Does he play with the blocks or the ball? Will he read a book or paint? Nobody can tell him what to do. Child psychologists also believe that a toy room can help him become more independent, since it encourages him to make small but simple decisions without mom and dad hovering over his shoulder.

For parents, the toy room is an enclosed, designated area where they can leave the child and not worry about his safety. This leaves them free to attend to chores or get a precious half hour of "me time".

How to Set up a Toy Room

-Make sure that the Toy Room is completely child-proof, especially if you cannot see the child from where you will be staying. Windows should be securely locked (you can buy clips or window guards). If you have Venetian blinds, make sure that the cords are tied well above the child's reach (they can get strangled on them). Wall sockets must have plastic protectors. Other common hazards are: exposed cords, breakables, and sharp table corners.

-Invest in a baby monitor for small children. It's best if you can hear them if they cry--just so can quickly check that they haven't gotten hurt.

-Choose furniture (tables and chairs, cabinets, book shelves, or coat racks) that are specifically designed for your child's age and size. They can climb on a tall adult's and then crash down to the floor, or slip while trying to reach a book on a shelf that's too high.

-If your child's older and able to follow instructions, give simple toy room safety rules. Better yet, remove anything that would possibly cause danger beyond his ability to control himself. For example, instead of saying "Don't run around with the sharp scissors" give him specially designed scissors for kids.

Toy Room Furniture

-Toy chest. Keep small toys organized and out of the way to avoid slipping. If your child has a lot of toys, try breaking them into groups and then rotating them. Not only is this neater, it prevents a small child from becoming overwhelmed (and when you bring out an old toy that he hasn't seen in a long time, he'll treat it like it's brand new!)

-Book shelves. Encourage a love for reading by keeping books readily accessible. Make reading a special bonding moment as well--snuggle together to read aloud a favorite fairytale!

-Table and chair. A child needs a table for writing, drawing, and other activities that need a bare and elevated surface: putting together puzzles, crafting, playing with clay, or the impromptu teddy bear tea party. Make sure that the table and chair at the right height, and that he doesn't need to slouch over or arch his shoulders to reach the table.

-Art easel. Drawing, painting and other creative activities encourage imagination and creativity, and help strengthen the hand muscles for writing. (Did you know that many pre-schoolers have trouble keeping up at school just because they don't like writing?).

Other optional toy room furniture are tents (for hide and seek play), sleeping mats (for nap times and sleep overs), and clothes racks for jackets.

Classic Toys for your Toy Room

There are traditional toys without which no toy room could ever be considered complete. Be sure to stock up on these classics--and keep a spare copy of your child's favorite toy in case it gets broken or lost!

Balls. If you're worried about your child throwing it around and breaking something in the toy room, have "indoor balls" that are smaller and made of light weight materials like foam. Balls develop hand eye coordination and are one of the few toys that are more fun when shared (great for play dates).

Dolls and stuffed animals. These toys are not only comforting and fun to hug, but are handy for imaginative play. Why not treat your child to a beautiful doll house?

Crayons, paper, and other art materials. If you're worried that your child will scrawl on the walls of your beautifully decorated toy room, buy special "washable" crayons that can be easily wiped off with water.

Blocks. Stack them up into cities or kingdoms. With a little imagination your child can also use them in conjunction with toys and dolls.

Puzzles. These help develop logic and spatial reasoning...not to mention patience! Choose puzzles that are appropriate for your child's age and skill, since getting something too complex will only discourage him.

Decorating your Toy Room

Now even the busiest parents can easily decorate a toy room. There are coordinated furniture sets for quite a number of themes, from a princess toy room in a charming pastel pink to a colorful zoo toy room for children who love animals. Just by selecting the right pieces, and choosing a complementing color for the walls, your toy room has that happy, "pulled together" look--even if you didn't hire an interior designer! Complete the design with sticker decals, themed beddings, matching accessories (like lamps and curtains), and your child's own art work. Wouldn't that be a toy room that anyone would be proud of?
